Brief
History Of Maitland The area was settled in the early 1980s, as a convict town, was known as the Wallis Plains settlement. The settlement was thriving and in 1829 it officially became Maitland. In the mid to late 1980s the town was a thriving centre and was busy enough to rival Sydney as the capital of NSW.

| Probably the most famous of Maitland's attractions is the Old Maitland Gaol. It closed in 1998 and now it runs tours both day and night. The building was made of sandstone, bricks and concrete, in. It was thought of as the toughest gaol in Australia. |
